Guest Bedroom Makeover

3

Last week in my insta stories, I showed you the behind the scenes of our guest bedroom makeover (you can still view those stories here in my highlights!). I’m so happy with how this space turned out for our video with this cute Martha Stewart bedding line!

In my stories I also gave you a candid update on this DIY plywood planked floors tutorial I did right after we moved to our house, about five years ago (can you believe it’s been that long already?!). In general, I’m still really happy with these floors, but there are a few changes I’d make if I were to do it again, including using a more expensive plywood from a harder wood, like maple or birch. The really inexpensive pine sheets we used have a lot of character now :) with cracks and marks from rolling office chairs (you can see details in my stories!). BUT at $1/foot, I’m still pretty happy with how these floors look and work for us in this above-the-garage suite.

This platform bed was probably my very favorite part of the install! It was only $899, which is a killer deal considering you don’t need a box spring or a bedskirt to finish off the look. I LOVE the warmth from the wood on the frame, and the softness from the upholstered headboard! It is a GREAT bed. It is lower to the ground because it is a platform bed, but I wouldn’t say it was weirdly small or short. It would be especially great for rooms with lower ceilings, though we have vaulted ceilings in our guest room suite and it didn’t feel too-short in here at all.

The cute bedding is from Macy’s and that beautiful striped lumbar is from our second Juniper Studio Home pillow collection, which will be launching soon! :) You guys were so amazingly supportive about our last launch! I couldn’t believe we basically sold out in less than an hour! We have been adding a few to the shop here and there lately, but we’ll be sure to announce on the Juniper Studio instagram when the next collection launches. We are focusing just on the lumbar size this time, which is my FAVORITE for beds. I think it makes a bed look done up, but in such a simple and easy way!

Another surprising find for our new guest bedroom was this SUPER affordable rug! The price has been fluctuating a bit, usually between $260 and $300 for a 7×11′, which is absolutely the PERFECT size for a Queen bed! I love that’s a little longer and skinnier than a standard 8×10. I think it’s ideal for the rug to end about where the nightstands end so there’s plenty of soft rug to see and to step down onto when getting out of bed.

These nightstands were another great find! They were only $199, which I think is still a great price even though I ended up having to paint them. Here’s what the listing photo looked like. Seemed like a nice midtone gray metal color, right? WHY can’t retailers use listing photos that actually reflect the real life color and finish of their products? Like, it seems like this would only save them so much hassle with returns and customer service issues, right?

The nightstands did come quickly though and the construction was top notch! Sturdy, all metal, an integrated drawer pull. I loved everything but the straight up silver finish. No biggie though – I used Rustoleum’s metallic spray paint in Black Stainless Steel and it was the perfect dark gunmetal color I was hoping for when I placed the order!

We finished off the space with these two-arm swinging sconces, a faux fiddle leaf tree and a giant print of BIG SUR from photographer Jillian Goulding. It’s one of my favorites in JPS right now! I had the image printed to fit a $3 brass thrift store frame, and I think it looks perfect here. I started the print shop because I wanted to provide art that could be flexible to fit different spaces and frames that you can find affordably. This frame is about 30×40 and everything included would have cost you less than $70! So awesome, right?

This guest room is beautiful! I watched the story in your highlights again because I was hoping to see the details of printing a JPS print on vinyl. I know you put it in a story, but I can’t find it now. If you have time, it would be great if you could direct me. Also, it’s funny, but one of my favorite things in the room is that little easel with the knots print on it. Looks so good–gotta get one.

  2. Ann

I would also love to read a blog post on all the details of how you printed and framed the large vinyl photo – similar to the one you did at the Gentry house!!!! It was so cool!

  3. Maggie

I have that bed with the leather headboard instead of fabric, and we absolutely love it! Bummer that the nightstands image isn’t true to life!

  4. Jennette

Omg!! I literally bought the same bed and nightstands and they were delivered a week ago for our other house. When I saw the nightstands I freaked at how silver they were and promptly moved them to my son’s room. They looked futuristic and not the relaxed vibe I was looking for. I purchased some Anthropologie ones instead, but wish I saw this post first, as I may need to try that trick. They look nothing like the website! Your room looks great!

  5. Carl

Przyznaję, teraz wszystko wygląda tak elegancko.

  6. Laura

So pretty and fresh! LOVE those sconces!

  7. EK

First time commenter, long time reader (Since your Brooklyn days! I just have to say, yours is one of the few blogs left that I rely on for clever, creative design that is actually on a decent budget. It’s so, so disappointing to read posts on other sites that are full of sponsored furniture I could never afford. Plus, it doesn’t require as much creativity to buy a bunch of expensive furniture! I love that you spray paint side tables, get stylish sconces from Urban Outfitters, and showcase your super stylish prints (that I recommend to every friend.) Congrats on your success, and thank you for keeping it real!

Thanks Eliza! In all honesty, love a good splurge in every room (if the budget allows it!), but as a rule of thumb I think a smart DIY, a beautiful vintage find and the mix of high and low is what gives a room a story and soul! Thanks for being here and for being such a longtime reader! xo

  17. Kate

It is very overwhelming to make a certified messages in a brief time period and still own heads full of tips to generate unique ones. I should express that the blogger is a professional writer.

I’m jealous of this room :) It is so beautiful. I’m hoping to update our very pathetic-looking master bedroom in the near future and want to use Big Sur above our bed (one of our favorite spots!). One small change I can make immediately is to replace our ugly black digital alarm clock. We like having the digital display that we can see when it is dark in the room, but I’m having a hard time finding a pretty (like one that would work in the room in this post) version of a digital alarm clock. Any suggestions?

  20. Kate

Perfect article! It might get a perfect delight to read it. Congratulation! Well done! I am just waiting for much more texts.

  21. Elena

  24. It is a luxury room of a five-star hotel, really very awesome. The art of putting things in the right place is really very nice. Thanks for sharing this post.

  25. Diane Chabak

    Hello! I love this room!
I remember a while ago you gave a tip to find huge metal poster frames and I loved that. For some reason I constantly keep an eye out and cant ever find any big ones! Is this one a vintage frame or did you have it framed professionally and if so where? I LOVE this look!
Thanks for everything, Im obsessed with your blog, i’ve used soo many of your tips!
